Medway Road project officially opened

RBIDZ has signed investments to the value of R10-billion representing different sectors of the economy

HAILED as a major milestone for infrastructure development in KZN, the recently completed Medway Road project in Richards Bay was officially opened on Tuesday.

Congratulating the staff and management of the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone (RBIDZ), KZN MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Sihle Zikalala, said the development of the road fits in with the provincial government’s grand vision of driving new trade.

He said that industrialisation and marketing KZN as an attractive investment destination are paramount.

‘We are excited that RBIDZ has signed investments to the value of R10-billion which represent different key sectors of the economy,’ said Zikalala.

‘It was through determination and tenacity that RBIDZ completed this project and it is a job well done,’ said Zikalala.

‘Now that we have seen what can be done, it is vital that other projects in the pipeline that have been signed off must be implemented.’

He also said SANRAL (SA National Roads Agency Ltd) and PRASA (Passenger Rail Agency of SA) are aiming to invest R26-billion into KZN over the next five years, of which two projects totalling R174-million have already been completed in our region.

These are the eTeza Traffic Control Centre north of KwaMbonambi and Mtubatuba’s kwaBhoboza interchange.

Zikalala went on to say that next year Nyanza Light Metals and New Zealand-based Avertana Ltd will begin building a R4.5-billion titanium beneficiation plant in Richards Bay.

Both projects will create significant permanent and temporary employment.

Thanking the RBIDZ board for always taking the right course in its decision making, City of uMhlathuze Mayor Mdu Mhlongo said infrastructure development is particularly important during times of slow economic growth.

RBIDZ CEO Pumi Motsoahae said the development of Medway Road was about improving access to the port and to facilitate the swift movement of freight.

He said they are celebrating this key milestone that is a major connection route between the Port of Richards Bay and the N2 via the John Ross Parkway.
