Call for ‘functional’ police station in Vulindlela

Memorial service for Vulindlela massacre

THE absence of a fully fledged police station in Vulindlela township was highlighted as one of the factors that led to the wild robbery shoot-out in which six people were killed last weekend.

This was the sentiment of ward 30 Councillor Muzi Mpungose, speaking at the memorial service of five of the victims gunned down at a township shopping complex.

‘While giving comfort to the bereaved, we are also mindful of the fact that this attack might not have happened or could have been prevented had we have a proper, fully functional police station.

‘The police station we now have in this area is mainly used for making affidavits and certifying documents.

‘In the interim we have asked the Mtunzini police to increase their visibility and patrols in the area to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

The combined memorial service was held to bid farewell to the three security guards – Mbuyiseni Ntuli (27), Mfanelo Mthethwa (30) and Mfihleni Zulu (52) – and bystanders Simphiwe Gumede (37) and Mandla Mbokazi (56). Mbokazi was a former chairperson of Amangwe Village.

Amamngwe paid tribute to Mbokazi on its Facebook page, saying he served the organisation with great commitment and dedication.

‘His knowledge of the needs of the people and his sense of good governance had a huge impact on the growth and development of Amangwe,’ said the post.

Meanwhile, police spokesperson, Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, said the three suspects – Cebo Mkhwanazi (39), Boy Sithole (51) and Phiwayinkosi Mnyandu (38) – appeared in the Mtunzini Magistrate Court last week.

‘They face six murder charges as well as attempted murder and armed robbery charges. They are expected to appear at the same court on Thursday.’
