WHILE SAPS members were investigating a robbery complaint in the Maqongo near Mbongolwane, around noon on Wednesday, 15 November, they came under attack.

The incident occurred in a very rural area, more than an hour’s drive from the Mbongolwane Police Station. When the robbery suspects saw the police arriving at the robbery scene, they ran away and hid themselves.
The victims asked to leave the area with the police as they were afraid of the attackers, who they said were armed.
The police agreed and while they were returning to the police station to open a case, they were ambushed by the suspects.
Const Mavundla was hit in his right thigh. losing control of the vehicle, which left the road.
He died on the scene. Sgt Zincume managed to run away to find help from a neighbouring homestead.
When the suspects saw that the van had stopped, they approached it and disarmed the deceased and ran away on foot.
