Unizulu student shot 6 times off-campus

Police confirmed that a female student was shot six times and a case has been opened at the Mtunzini Police Station

POLICE are investigating the murder of a University of Zululand student who was shot and killed off-campus on Monday night.

Empangeni Police Spokesperson, Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose confirmed that the female student was shot six times and a case has been opened at the Mtunzini Police Station.

‘The incident happened in KwaDlangezwa. It is not yet clear at this stage what exactly transpired and what the motive of the shooting is but police are investigating the case. No arrests have been made,’ Mdlalose told the ZO.

The student is believed to have been doing her final year at the university and was set to write her final exam on Tuesday.

A number of UniZulu students shared messages of support and condolences on Facebook following the incident.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the National Students’ Movement (NASMO) Unizulu branch called ‘on all relevant authorities, in particular, the SAPS and Protective Services Department (PSD) to improve their capabilities to save students’ lives.

In similar vein, we further call on the government to release resources to help save our lives in institutions of higher learning.’

‘The National Students’ Movement UniZulu Branch is deeply saddened to learn that an off-campus resident student was brutally gunned down to death yesterday (Monday). We feel the loss of our fellow student very keenly.

NASMO sends its deepest condolences to the family, friends and relatives of the deceased. Out of respect for the privacy of the family, the movement is not releasing the name of the student.’
