Three suspected cash-in-transit robbers arrested in Sundumbili

AN intelligence-led operation on Thursday by the Mandeni and Sundumbili SAPS saw the arrest of three suspects believed to be planning a shopping centre cash-in-transit robbery.

A 37-year-old suspect was arrested at the entrance of the business premises and was found in possession of a 9mm pistol with 27 live rounds of ammunition.

Two vehicles, a navy VW Golf and a Chevrolet Aveo were identified as getaway vehicles.

The suspects in the vehicles saw the police and sped off.

The Golf managed to flee the scene while the Chevrolet drove towards Gcaleka area in Sundumbili. One of the suspects alighted from the vehicle, dropped a bag and fled into the bushes.

Ammunition found in the possession of the suspects

The bag contained three unlicensed firearms and 14 live rounds of ammunition.

Two suspects aged 35 and 38 were arrested in the Sundumbili area following a search. They were found with an unlicensed firearm and 16 live rounds of ammunition.

The Chevrolet vehicle was also seized by the police.

The arrested suspects will be profiled to see if they are linked to other robberies committed in Mandeni and other areas around the province.

More arrests are imminent as investigations continue and those arrested are expected in court soon.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner in KZN praised the police effort: ‘I congratulate the members for averting the robbery by apprehending the culprits in possession of unlicensed firearms.

‘We are pleased that no one was injured during the chase with suspects.’
