One confirmed death from severe weather conditions

COGTA has urged people to be vigilant during bad weather

DISASTER management across KZN has been on high alert this week, after last weekend’s severe weather conditions, which resulted in widespread damage and one confirmed death in King Cetshwayo District.

KZN COGTA (Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs) MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube conveyed her condolences to the Zungu family, who lost one family member while another was hospitalised after a tree fell on electrical wires and electrocuted them.

‘This tragic incident is yet another reminder of the unnecessary loss of life that our province suffers every year as a result of inclement weather conditions.

‘Our disaster management teams are in contact with the family to provide the necessary support.’

COGTA issued a warning urging community members to be vigilant during bad weather, and to not cross low-lying bridges and rivers in low-lying areas.

‘Our province has seen cases where cars and people were swept away while trying to cross low-lying bridges. This leads to unnecessary loss of life.

‘Disaster management teams are on alert, and schools are urged to take stock of the weather before embarking on excursions.’

She said KZN’s disaster teams logged and responded to numerous incidents, including the City of uMhlathuze, in which both public infrastructure and private property were affected.

‘Our interim assessments reveal that houses had their roofs blown away, and trees had fallen over and blocked roads, causing damage to property and vehicles.’
