Teaching children to conserve trees daily

The municipality partnered with the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs and the King Cetshwayo District Municipality

UMLALAZI Municipality launched a plant a tree campaign at Baqaqi Primary School in the Nyanini area on Thursday.
The campaign was part of Arbor Week and organised to reach out to young learners in schools, teaching them about the importance of trees in their everyday lives and to convey necessary information about climate change.
The municipality partnered with the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs and the King Cetshwayo District Municipality.
Ward 13 Councillor Sanele Thango officially opened proceedings and acknowledged the educational initiative as an effect tool to educate local communities about the importance of trees.
‘It is very strategic to impart this knowledge to young people. This means even parents at home will benefit from the information and we will see a better understanding of the value of planting trees in communities,’ he said.
Leaders planted five trees at the school and also donated water buckets and other essentials. The buckets were provided to assist learners storing drinking water in their classrooms.
