Disabliity Expo roll-out for Richards Bay

Disabled duo plan Expo to showcase needs and talents of the disabled

PLANNING is well advanced for a unique, fun-filled Disability Awareness Expo to take place in Richards Bay at the end of September.

It has been created to highlight issues faced by people with disabilities, whether from an employment, education or business perspective.

‘There is still time and space for any number of people or organisations involved in the disability sector to get on board,’ said organisers Paulo dos Santos and Jayson Mitchell, who both live with physical disabilities.

‘This event would like to showcase what people with disabilities can do and become within society.

‘Among other items, the uMhlathuze Municipality will be hosting a workshop at the event regarding employment, educational and business opportunities.

‘We are proud to mention that this event is the first of its kind in South Africa. It has been created for disabled people by disabled people.

‘Its purpose is for the development of people with disabilities and the opportunities this event can create for all types of disabilities’,’ said Jayson.

‘We are very passionate about this as it’s very close to our hearts.

‘We as the organisers want to create change for all, and break the stigma regarding people with disabilities set against able bodied people.

‘We would like able bodied people to partake in many fun games designed to highlight what people with disabilities go through on a daily basis.

‘Disabled members have the opportunity of marketing their products, talents or skills, with plenty of stalls and stage shows on the programme

‘We have had buy-in from numerous organisations here and in other parts of the country and we are hoping this grows into an annual expo that makes a tangible difference to the disabled community,’ said Jayson.
