Women take the lead in crime fight project

Women's month celebrated in style

‘WEEK after week there are reports about teenagers being kidnapped, raped and others sold in the human trafficking market.

‘Perpetrators are using this N2 highway and that’s why we are here today to have a crime awareness campaign.’

This was the sentiment of Empangeni Youth Crime Prevention Desk Public Relations Officer, Muhle Mnguni.

Speaking to the Zululand Observer during last week’s roadblock held on the N2 near the Nseleni bridge, organised by Empangeni Crime Policing Forum in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies such as Empangeni SAPS, the City of uMhlathuze Traffic Department and Empangeni’s Road Traffic Inspectorate.

Mnguni said the N2 road was also used by those transporting drugs.

‘We are here to send a clear message that as women we are capable of taking the crime fight head-on.’

Traffic came to a halt for two hours when police and traffic officers stopped vehicles, checking their roadworthiness and licences, but also for weapons and drugs.

The campaign was led by Lt. Colonel Dudu Mnguni of Empangeni SAPS, who described it as part of commemorating Women’s Month.

‘As we intensify the fight against crime, we are not only focusing on arresting motorists, but we are also distributing pamphlets that deals with human trafficking, issues of domestic violence, gender-based violence and victim empowerment.

‘This exercise also aims to build and strengthen relations between the police and the community. This is not the last operation we are having. We will have similar campaigns in the future. We remain committed to curbing crime in our area,’ Mnguni said.

Also present at the roadblock were KZN CPF Chairperson Mthunzi Mthenjwa, Nseleni Councillor Dumisani Ndimande and Empangeni CPF Chairperson and City of uMhlathuze Deputy Mayor, Silondile Mkhize.
