WATCH: Wind sends surf surging

Waves measuring over five metres lashed the sea into a frenzy, pouring over the South Pier, Alkantstrand dolphin viewing platform and the short pier

GALE force winds of over 30 knots from the southwest caused the closure of the Port of Richards Bay today (Friday).

Waves measuring over five metres lashed the sea into a frenzy, pouring over the South Pier, Alkantstrand dolphin viewing platform and the short pier.

Shark nets were lifted in advance.

The wind is expected to steadili die down over the weekend, but a long board surfing competition is set to take place off Pelican Island on Sunday morning in anticipation of big, but better-shaped, waves.
