Cannabis research lab for Richards Bay

The research facility soon to open in Meerensee will focus on the medicinal use of cannabis

FOUR months after the Western Cape High Court’s ruling that cannabis would be legalised in South Africa, supporters of the law change are gearing up for the biggest clinical cannabis convention the country has ever seen.

Set to be held in Pretoria on Saturday, the convention will be attended by, among others, medical and pharmaceutical professionals from around the world.

According to its website, the convention aims to ‘consolidate understanding of cannabis and its reintegration into society, while reconstructing ways to maximise the benefits and minimise the harm from uninformed use’.

Based in Meerensee, the Bobby Greenhash Foundation will also attend the conference as the foundation seeks to become a key role player in the clinical and medicinal use of cannabis.

The foundation is in the throes of setting up a laboratory at its premises at the Tuzi Gazi Waterfront, which will become a scientific research facility.

The aim is to commission local universities to study cannabis within the facility, essentially allowing the studying of the plant to be undertaken by a recognised educational organisation.

The facility will focus on research and development, eventually leading to the creation of a unique fingerprint by isolating the makeup of cannabis, so different types of medicines can be created to treat specific ailments.

‘We are looking to use science to develop organic, natural medicines as an alternative to pharmaceutical medicines,’ said Sheldon Cramer, aka Bobby Greenhash.

‘By establishing our own formal lab, we are pre-empting the legalisation of cannabis and aim to be a major research and development centre.’

The laboratory is set to be up and running during the course of the next two months.
