New group to tackle social ills in Mtubatuba

New non-profit tackles social ills

A NEWLY formed non-profit organisation, Stop H.A.S.H.T.A.G, joined AIDe African Angels to take victims of social ills under their wings.

H.A.S.G.T.A.G is an acronym for HIV, AIDS, sexism, hate crimes, teenage pregnancies, abuse and gender-based violence.

The group, now called Stop H.A.S.H.T.A.G. Angels, hopes to curb stigmas and prominent trends negatively impacting Mtubatuba’s youth on a daily basis.

‘Every person has a story to tell, each a victim in their own way,’ said H.A.S.H.T.A.G’s founder Thembinkosi Mhlongo.

‘Being a victim myself, I have realised that we have to come together as a collective to maximise our impact on these various scourges which plague individuals and societies.

‘We are in partnership with Angels with the intention of confronting all forms of social ills under one umbrella.’

The non-profit will be officially launched in Mtubatuba tomorrow (Friday).

‘We encourage the community to work with us to make the town a safe haven for all vulnerable individuals,’ said Mhlongo.

‘Our ‘Stop Harassment Campaign’ will focus on gender-based violence with special emphasis on ‘femicide’. This painful issue has recently been at the heart of every South African.

‘Crimes committed against women and young girls must be tackled vigorously.’

The organisation has also set up an sms line and community members can show their support by donating R5 through texting ‘Stop Harassment’ to 48104.

‘Funds will support volunteers who make bus stops and streets safer for commuters and children in the early hours of the morning and late in the evenings.

‘Our police support staff is limited and at times unable to offer constant surveillance.

‘Let us join hands with our protection units to protect our community,’ he said.
