Community must take collective stand against drugs

Every citizen has role to play in fighting drug scourge

HAVING started the fight against drugs in Zululand almost four decades ago, former South African Narcotics Bureau (SANAB) Commander Stan Turketti returned to Richards Bay last week to host a strategic drug awareness session and discuss ways to tackle the drug problem.

Hosted in partnership with the Richards Bay SAPS, local non-profit organisations, schools, government departments, counsellors, anti-drug forum organisation members and church leaders met at Seagull Lodge in Arboretum to discuss the problem and share information on prevention, intervention and referrals of drug abusers.

Turketti said networking and strategies remain a key component to addressing the drug problem.

With all syndicates working at the same level, he believes they are successful because their operational structures are strong and difficult to infiltrate.

‘The syndicates are effective because they stand together, scheme and plan, and it is up to each and every citizen to take a stand and act against these operations.

‘It is up to us to bring about change in the province. We have to stand in unity.’
