New fleet of patrol cars for uMhlathuze traffic cops

City spends R4-million on new cars to boost patrols

A NEW fleet of vehicles with a price tag of R4-million was delivered in March for the City of uMhlathuze traffic department.

The new cars are waiting at the municipality’s workshop for branding and installation of equipment such as radios and security devices before being allocated for use by officers.

According to an item presented last week at the City’s Exco meeting, the state of existing patrol vehicles is ‘distressing’.

‘Officers as a result are assigned in teams to vehicles due to the shortage of vehicles.

‘This is a counter-productive approach, because officers who could do more work in different vehicles have to be crammed into one vehicle in order for them to be able to go out on the roadways.
