Road issues lead to protests at Ntuze
The community were up in arms over the upkeep of the gravel road that leads into the Ongoye Reserve and want the road to be tarred
THE community of Ntuze took measures into their own hands on Monday morning as dozens of residents gathered and blockaded part of the R102 near the Ongoye Service Station.
The community were up in arms over the upkeep of the gravel road that leads into the Ongoye Reserve and want the road to be tarred.
When the Eyethu Bay Watch arrived on scene, much of the burning rubble, broken glass and trees had been removed from the road as various officials had come to a resolution with the angered community.
Mfundo Mthejane, Speaker of uMhlathuze Municipality, told the Eyethu Bay Watch they are currently in the process of resolving the issue.
‘The situation has calmed down; we have spoken to the people of Ward 1, Ntuze, who have been complaining about the road. They want a tar road.’

While the maintenance of the access road that leads from the R102 into the Ongoye Reserve is the responsibility of the city, the tarring of the road itself will fall under the KZN Department of Transport.
‘On Sunday we will have a meeting with the DoT who will then explain to us the process going forward regarding this road.
‘As far as we know, the DoT was busy with the environmental impact assessment regarding the tarring of the road, we will see how far the process is and will know by next week,’ he said.
