Empangeni SPCA brings dog back from the brink of death

Pie is eight weeks old and is ready to be adopted into a loving home

EMPANGENI SPCA staff had their work cut out for them when a little pup, who would later be named Pie, was dropped off and was at death’s door.

‘When Pie arrived, she was just three weeks old, riddled with worms and severely malnourished,’ said Debbie Cross of Empangeni SPCA.

A vet was consulted and, despite giving the tiny pup just 24 hours to live, the team decided to do what they could for her.

For the worm infestation, Pie was put on a strict de-worming protocol and was also put onto antibiotics for her other ailments, such as swollen joints brought on through malnourishment.

After: Pie is now a healthy, bouncy eight-week-old pup

She was also put onto a high-protein diet and initially fed every two hours.

Five weeks later and against all odds, Pie is a healthy, bouncy and very happy eight-week-old pup, thought to be a labrador-cross-boerbul.

She is now ready to be adopted but, although she will undoubtedly become a fairly large dog, Pie needs a home where she will become another member of the family and will be allowed to sleep inside.

She is not an outside security dog.

Anyone interested in adopting Pie, or any other animals at Empangeni SPCA, can contact the office on 071 1744746.

Home checks and a strict adoption procedure applies.
