UniZulu’s Sizwe Maguni graduated with 24 distinctions

'They (the educators) have always believed in me'

SIZWE Maguni, who lost both his parents at the age of one, has graduated with 24 distinctions at the University of Zululand.

Maguni is one of the top achievers in the Faculty of Education at the institution.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Education degree (further education and training: geography and language) on Monday.

‘I’m very excited about my academic performance. In truth, I did not expect it as I found geography and English to be difficult majors,’ the 23-year-old said.

He said discipline propelled him to achieve great marks, not only at the university, but also in matric where he obtained seven distinctions.

Discipline, coupled with determination, carried him through when he also lost his maternal aunt, whom he says he was extremely close to, a day before writing his Grade 12 geography exam.

‘I managed to pass that paper, which consisted of two papers on the same day, because I had studied hard during the entire year,’ said Maguni.

Not only does he attribute his great achievements to his late aunt who urged him to work hard to get an education, he also acknowledged his educators and study group for his success.

‘They (the educators) have always believed in me. They kept in constant contact with me during my studies at university and supported me with finances as I was severely lacking in that area.

‘I will never forget what they did for me and I thank them for their love and support.’
