Youth development a priority in Mandlazini
NRB Youth Development helps furnish young aspiring entrepreneurs with the necessary skills to become stable and successful business owners
A MADLAZINI skills and youth development initiative recently had the opportunity of expanding its offerings to the community when members attended a training of trainers workshop on advocacy skills for young entrepreneurs in Durban.
Under the chairmanship of Aubrey Mdluli, NRB Youth Development (NRBYD) is a beneficiary initiative of the National Youth Service Programme, which assists youngsters in acquiring life and business skills while involved in the reconstruction of their communities.
NRBYD membership includes young aspiring entrepreneurs and youth in businesses in and around Madlazini.
The organisation’s interventions include youth entrepreneurship, unemployment and poverty, HIV/Aids/STI and teenage pregnancy awareness, drugs and alcohol abuse, and renewable energy technology.
Last week’s function in Durban was organised by the International Labour Organisation, whose aim is to promote work through social enterprise development.
Among the items covered at the event were basic skills for training, what is advocacy for social entrepreneurs, the advocacy process, how to develop and implement a successful advocacy strategy, assessing the impact of an advocacy strategy, and bridging the gender gap.
‘The training was intensive and included group work, presentations and role plays, but also enabled us to take advantage of various networking opportunities with businesses such as the Businesswomen’s Association of South Africa and the 1 000 Hills Tourism CTO,’ said Mdluli.
‘We also had an opportunity to interact with eThekwini Municipality officials and were able to ask them relevant questions.
‘This was a great experience for us and we are looking forward to sharing our new skills with other young entrepreneurs in our community.’
