Richards Bay fraudster gets heavy sentence

Former Church secretary in the dock

RICHARDS Bay resident Henry Veerasamy, charged last year with defrauding a Brackenham church, was found guilty on two counts of theft and sentenced in the Durban Commercial Crime Court.

Veerasamy, the former Secretary at Living Stones Baptist Church, stole R200 000 from the church bank account.

The crimes were committed in 2013.

He unlawfully transferred R110 000 on 4 February and R90 000 on 21 October out of the church accounts.

He was sentenced to four years imprisonment, suspended for five years, 30 months of correctional supervision and ordered to perform 16 hours of community service every month.

In addition he also has to pay back the R200 000 to the church.
