WEATHER: Weekend snowfall predicted for KZN only

Snow has been predicted in extreme high peaks of Lesotho and the Drakensburg for this weekend

IT’S time to get out those gloves, beanies and scarves because it looks like there might be a good chance of snowfall in KZN this weekend – well that’s the good news.

The bad news is that it currently looks like snowfall will be limited to the extreme high peaks of eastern Lesotho and the Drakensburg, meaning that unless you have a 4×4, chances are you won’t be able to access the areas predicted to receive snow.

Snow Report SA issued out a statement this week noting there is a good chance of snow on the KZN Drakensberg, starting on Thursday night over the extreme high peaks around Thabana Ntlenyana in Lesotho.

It should move onto the central Drakensberg peaks during Friday, affecting Northern Drakensberg peaks from late on Friday night.

‘All these areas mentioned, could continue to get light snowfalls on the peaks right through until Sunday afternoon.

‘These falls are dependent on a cut-off low forming on Thursday, but at this early stage, it is looking very likely.

‘We will keep watching, and update the forecast in the days ahead.

‘Indications are that some of the high peaks in the Central Drakensberg could get as much as 20cm, but we will know more, closer to the time.

‘At this stage, no snow will fall in any of the SA provinces, and falls will be confined to the extreme high peaks of eastern Lesotho,’ it said.
