Wrap up of city Exco meeting

EXTRACTS from Friday's uMhlathuze Municipality's Executive Committee meeting:

Major cracks in Ngwelezans substation

Soon after handing over a new switching room and 11 kilovolt switchboard with a price tag of just under R8.3-million at Ngwelezana’s main substation in September last year, the existing building started showing major structural cracks.

After an investigation by consultant Gudunkomo Investments, it was recommended the city constructs a new building, raising the contract value from R8.27-million to R9.14-million.

It was proposed the R824 000 difference for the rebuild be transferred from the ‘Electrification Brackenham’ budget for the 2016/2017 financial year.

New soccer pitch for Madlebe

Madlebe is getting a new sports field, fitted with a combi court, changing room, ablution facility and high concrete fencing, budgeted at around R10-million.

The project falls under the Vukuphile Learnership Programme that the municipality implemented with the Department of Public Works, which focuses on supporting emerging contractors.

Refurbishment of Madlazini hall

The city gave a thumbs up for the restoration of the community hall in Madlazini.

A budget of R1.5-million was set aside for the project as part of the municipality’s objectives to improve basic services and infrastructure to communities.

Thanda funding request

Thanda Royal Zulu Football Club has requested an additional R500 000 above the allocated R1.5-million from the city to support the team this financial year.

The club’s source of income is through a monthly grant from the Premier Soccer League, but it still suffers a monthly shortfall of R490 000.

Council supported the request and will source the R500 000 from savings in the grants and donations vote.
