IN stark contrast to the customary warm ‘welcome to the neighbourhood’, five residents who recently moved into their newly-built homes in Mzingazi woke up in the middle of the night to the chilling sound of gunshots and broken glass.
Five cases of attempted murder were opened at the Richards Bay SAPS after a group of armed vigilantes shot at the victims, broke windows and doors and set one of the homeowners’ vehicle alight just after 3am on Wednesday.
According to police, none of the victims were injured.
One community member told the Zululand Observer the mob was heard shouting for the new residents to leave the village, but the police said it was too early to confirm the motive for the attack.
