Prince Nhlanganiso Zulu of KwaDlamahlahla promotes circumcision

IN an effort to curb the spread of diseases such as HIV/Aids, men must be encouraged to undergo circumcision.

This appeal was made by Prince Nhlanganiso Zulu of KwaDlamahlahla when addressing a District Traditional Council meeting in Richards Bay.

He appealed to traditional leaders to take a leading role in encouraging young men to get circumcised.

‘When this custom was spearheaded by my father (King Goodwill Zwelithini), he was concerned about the high number of people infected with HIV/Aids.

‘I wish to urge all Amakhosi who are here today and iziNduna to spread the message of circumcision to all rural young men. It must be clear though, that getting circumcised is not a solution to HIV/Aids.

‘Being circumcised does not give one a ticket to become reckless. We need to inculcate a culture of respect among these young men if we are serious about building a nation,’ he warned.

Prince Zulu also warned about tuberculosis, saying this was another disease which posed a serious threat if left unchecked.

King Cetshwayo District Municipality Speaker Khulani Hadebe echoed Prince Zulu’s sentiments, saying as the district municipality they would support any initiative aimed at reducing HIV/Aids infection.

‘Relating to another important issue, we will also embark on a roadshow to address some misconceptions about water payment, as some rural communities believe the water we are providing is for free.

‘We only provide 6kl for free, but once you have used more than that, you start paying. There is nothing like free water for rural communities,’ he said.

Cogta District Manager Mbuso Sikhakhane assured the Amakhosi that iziNduna will receive their salary payments on March 30 this year, which have been increased from R1 300 to R7 000.
