DEDICATION and hard work have definitely paid off for two Empangeni High School (EHS) trumpet players.
Palesa Ndlela and James Swan have been selected as members of the KZN Youth Wind Band for 2017, which will compete at the New York Wind Band Festival in the USA next month.
The local duo got the nod after impressing the judges and outshining many other hopefuls during auditions in Durban.
The two EHS trumpeters joined the provincial team after Russell Scott of the KZN Youth Wind Band witnessed their performances at the national school band competition in Empangeni last year.
‘Ndlela and Swan and other EHS learners started rehearsals and training at the Durban Music School. During that time, the group wanted to check how they blended in with others,’ said EHS music teacher Renier de Bruin.
‘After the trial run they had to do auditions where the best players in different instruments were selected. Ndlela and Swan made it into the team after the final auditions.
‘We are very proud of what they have achieved and we have no doubt they will excel in the USA and fly the SA flag high.
‘Their passion is amazing and it gives us much joy to have been instrumental in developing them into young emerging musicians,’ De Bruin said.
De Bruin also applauded parents’ involvement and continuous support.
‘Parents’ support of their children has been amazing, and it’s through that support that we are able to provide kids with opportunities, knowing parents will be behind us. They are always a positive influence and make our roles as teachers easy.’
