Protective shield for abuse victims

New hotline for domestic abuse victims in Meerensee

FOR victims of domestic abuse in Meerensee, help is now a quick phone call away .

The Meerensee Community Police Forum (CPF) last Monday officially launched a 24-hour hotline to assist children and women confronted with abusive and violent behaviour in their households.

Not only will the CPF rush to callers’ homes day or night, but the task team has also brought on board five attorneys to secure protection orders for victims, as well as pastors and qualified social workers to offer counselling.

Two bed and breakfast establishments in the suburb have also signed up to provide free accommodation to those who are unsafe and under immediate threat.

‘We felt starting this helpline is crucial after CPF members last year responded to 11 domestic abuse cases in the suburb – and those were only the ones we were made aware of,’ said Meerensee CPF member Corrie Pretorius.

‘Many victims said they had no one who could come out immediately when they were in volatile situations.

‘We can now confidently assure them that if they report it, help will be on the way.’

Pretorius added the initiative will be rolled out to the other nine CPFs in Richards Bay.

The hotline number is 084 7833020.
