Big loss for locals

Double chance for uThungulu to make cricket amends

NOT for the first time this season, RH Construction uThungulu’s batsmen failed to offer resistance as the side tumbled to a huge loss to Topham at the Chatsworth Oval on Sunday.

Put in to bat first, the hosts had strung together 174 in the 50-over Premier League contest.

They lost their last wicket after 49.2 overs had been completed.

Given their inconsistency in what has been a topsy-turvy season thus far, it was hard to predict what uThungulu’s response would be.

Worst fears were realised as wickets tumbled from the outset, and a paltry total of 73 saw them slump to a huge l02 run defeat.

The top five accumulated just 13 runs between them, with the middle order faring slightly better thanks to Daryl Hatting (12) and Ruan van Rensburg (22 not out) – the latter probably the most in-form player in the side at the moment with bat or ball.

The only thing uThungulu won on the day was the toss.

And that didn’t help much.

‘The pitch did get very low but that’s not an excuse; we had the option to bat first but chose to bowl, so very poor again,’ said uThungulu Manager Bryan van Aswegen.

The team will hope to make amends this weekend with a double-header in Durban, taking on Clares and Delta.
