Pongola by-election registration weekend

All voting stations will open this Saturday and Sunday

VOTERS will have an opportunity this weekend to register for wards to be contested in municipal by-elections on 29 March.

Municipal ward by-elections are scheduled to take place in Ward 32 in KZN225 (Msunduzi) and in Ward 71 in KZN262 (uPhongolo).

All voting stations in these wards will open this Saturday and Sunday (4 and 5 February) from 8am to 5pm to allow eligible voters to register and to check their registration details.

Those registering need to present their ID document (either a green bar-coded ID book, a smart card ID or a valid temporary ID certificate). They will also need to complete their physical home address on registration.

Documented proof of address, such as a municipal account, is not required.

Voters may also check and update their details at their local IEC office during office hours on weekdays.

The public are reminded that they may only register and vote in a ward in which they are ordinarily resident.

Registering to vote where you do not live is a criminal offense.

The uPhongolo (Ward 71) seat (3 890 registered voters) became vacant following the death of the councillor.

Registration and voting will take place at Sivule Primary School, Ntshangase Tribal Court, Sibonile Primary School and the Sithambi community hall.

Special voting at voting stations as well as home visits will take place on 28 March between 8am and 5pm.

Voters wishing to cast a special vote must apply at their local IEC office during office hours between 13 and 17 March.
