Hawks have stepped in to further investigate a most wanted suspect involved in hijacking

THE Hawks in the province have stepped in to further investigate three suspects who were arrested and detained on Friday morning by detectives of the King Cetshwayo Cluster.

The arrests took place after detectives received information about their most wanted suspects who were reported to have been involved in hijacking government vehicles in the area.

Following up on the information obtained, SAPS members went to Dumisani Makhaye Village, outside Empangeni, where they found an Isuzu double cab vehicle fitting the description given to them.

The vehicle and its three occupants were searched and three handguns with ammunition were seized.

One of the suspects was identified as the most wanted for hijacking and all three were arrested and charged for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

The suspects aged between 30 and 40 years appeared at the eShowe Magistrate’s Court on Monday where the case was remanded until next Monday for a formal bail application.

They will remain in custody at the Richards Bay Police Station until then.

The KZN Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa welcomed the arrest of the suspects and the recovery of unlicensed firearms and urged community members to continue being the eyes and ears of the police.

The firearms will be sent for ballistics tests to establish if they were used in any other crimes in the country.

Empangeni Police Spokesperson Captain Mbongeni Mdalose said the identities of the suspects will be revealed to the public following further investigations.
