Questions raised over bogus B&B’s

What's going on at R200 per hour B&B's?

B&B’s that charge R200 an hour and serve alcohol day and night were the subject of inquisitive and delicate debate at the City of uMhlathuze Exco meeting held on Tuesday morning.

The topic raised its head during a land usage discussion when Cllr Mdu Zikhali queried the number of unapproved establishments such as taverns, bars and accommodation outlets in the city – specifically in Mzingazi.

While none of the members present admitted to any personal knowledge of B&B’s charging per hour, it was acknowledged the acronym in many instances might aptly refer to Bonk&Booze.

‘Why are there so many of these seedy places flourishing?

Why are they not raided and closed down. We all know what their real purpose is,’ said Cllr Zikhali, who demanded they be raided and closed.

Officials responded, saying an audit had been done last year to ascertain the number of legal establishments in the hospitality industry.

By process of elimination, the next phase will be to identify illegal pubs, clubs, B&B’s, taverns.

The SAPS and Liquor Board are part of the process.

Once identified, the unlawful premises will either be forced to close, or stiff sentences will be given to owners and illegal operators.
