New tankers provide water relief

The district reports spending R700 000 hiring water tankers.

TO help deal with its problems of water scarcity caused by the incessant drought, uMkhanyakude District Municipality took possession of two brand new water tankers from Cogta on Monday.

Months of drought have resulted in dams drying up and communities struggling for water, with the residents of Mtubatuba, KwaMsane, Hlabisa, Hluhluwe and St Lucia becoming dependent on water tankers to deliver water from the Mkuze River, which is said to also be drying up.
The district reports spending R700 000 hiring water tankers used to travel over 200km daily delivering water to these communities. This is now going to be a thing of the past with the two new water tankers.
The municipality has also loaned 15 water tankers from the Department of Water Affairs as a temporary measure, to assist in the water shortage challenge.
‘These water tankers are already doing service delivering water to households with no running water.

‘Of course, these are temporary measures to relieve the district of the scourge of drought, while the district is planning new water infrastructure all over uMkhanyakude,’ said spokesperson Mdu Dlamini.

According to the municipality, in uMhlabuyalingana a water scheme called Shemula has been opened, supplying more than 50 000 residents of Ingwavuma, Bhambanana, Ndumo, Ophondweni and Manguzi with clean drinking water.
