New resource for good health

‘Weight management is crucial as both too much and too little fat affects the bones'

IT’s not only sticks and stones that may break our bones.

Aging, contact sports, pregnancy, obesity, diabetes, asthma, lifestyle, chronic medications, HIV and a number of other factors may impact on our skeletal and metabolic health.

For that reason, the opening of the Bone Vitality Centre at Lakeside Mall in Richards Bay is a welcome addition to the city’s growing reputation as a prime regional medical care district.

The combination of an experienced operator and state of the art technology is reassuring to those who – knowingly or unknowingly – have bone density issues.

Motselisi Mosiana, a diagnostic radiographer with many years’ experience, has worked in government, private sector and mining settings.

A partner in CareDoc radiography services and a finalist in the BWA regional business awards, she also holds a degree in quality management.

‘I am an avid advocate of preventative medicine and my involvement in HIV peer education for many years led to my decision to open the Bone Vitality Centre.’

The centre has invested in the most modern DXA (Dual X-ray Absorptiometry) bone densitometer, which will be able to perform two crucial tests: bone mineral density and whole body composition analysis scan.

‘The bone mineral density scan is vital in the screening of osteoporosis – a silent killer as bones become thin and fragile due to age,’ says Motselisi.

‘Our bones are living organisms, that continually rebuild and break down, reaching a peak in our twenties, then starting to lose more than it regains.’

Motselesi believes it is essential to determine and monitor distribution of body fat, bone, and lean muscle mass, in order to manage conditions and provide correct treatment.

‘It can also assist sportsmen and women to monitor the effect of training and nutrition on the body condition. It was used successfully at the London Olympics, whereby athletes optimised their training.

‘Weight management is crucial as both too much and too little fat affects the bones.’

With government planning to introduce the sugar tax in 2017, in order to fight obesity – the source of illnesses like type 2 diabetes, heart attacks and high blood pressure – bone density and body fat testing will become increasingly important.

Bone Vitality centre will be at forefront of helping the community to achieve their health goals by establishing itself as preventative medicine centre, offering both diagnosis and screening services effectively and efficiently.
