UPDATE: Death trap taxi COR in the spotlight

It quickly became apparent the vehicle was not even close to being roadworthy

THE owner of a vehicle testing station has confirmed he is conducting an internal investigation into possible fraud at his facility where unroadworthy vehicles are allegedly issued false Certificates of Roadworthiness (COR).

This after a taxi, registered to a taxi owner in eSikhaweni and licensed in Richards Bay, was issued with a COR on 4 November with major faults, making it a potential death trap.

The taxi was stopped at a Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) roadblock on the John Ross Highway last week and it quickly became apparent the vehicle, which was licensed until October 2017, was not even close to being roadworthy.

‘It is not possible to comment on the situation without us doing our own internal investigation,’ a spokesperson for URVTS said on behalf of the owner, Mosagie Dawood.

The COR was issued by URVTS and according to official records, the vehicle was tested by a Mr Ntshangase – but URVTS only has branches in Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape, as well as Bethal and Piet Retief in Mpumalanga.

The ZO brought this information to the attention of local authorities last week before contacting the company for comment.
