Walk in the park for Bay Rugby Club cricket

This is the last weekend of round robin fixtures for both first and second divisions

RICHARDS Bay Rugby Club 1 claimed a comprehensive 98 run victory over Empangeni Sports Club in a Saturday 24 Over first division league game at Addison Park on Saturday.

Richards Bay captain Ruan Janse van Rensburg chose the right side of the coin, winning the toss and electing to bat first.

‘Addison Park’s pitch always slows down in the second innings and I have three spinners in my bowling attack, so I thought it would be better to set a total to bowl at,’ he said.

The Bay outfit reached 155 all out in the 24th over, thanks to contributions from Freedom Buthelezi (24) and Piet Meintjies (24).

‘We lost quick wickets which forced me to go into my shell and play an anchor innings. I had to adjust my normal attacking game to a very conservative one to aid the team,’ said Buthelezi.

uThungulu players Dale van der Merwe and Lazar Holmes came to the party for the opposing side, ending with bowling figures of 3/20 in 5.6 and 3/35 in 5 overs respectively.

‘Hitting the deck hard at various lengths up front was not working, as the pitch failed to assist us bowlers. Therefore I changed my plan to bowling full, wicket to wicket,’ said Holmes.

Short lived

Empangeni’s stay at the crease was brief, getting bowled out for 57 in the 10th over.

Stephan Joubert (26) was the only batsman who stood his ground.

Buthelezi (4/27 in 6) and veteran Charl Groenewald (3/12 in 2) ripped through the Empangeni side to aid their team to a 98 run victory.

This is the last weekend of round robin fixtures for both first and second divisions, before teams head into the semi-finals on Saturday, 3 December.
