Traffic detours as N2 roadworks pick up pace

Traffic will still be kept as one lane in both directions from Tuesday

MOTORISTS planning to travel on the N2 this festive season have been warned of detours that will be in place as the pace of construction steps up.

The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has issued a notice regarding a new temporary bypass at the Eteza intersection as of next Tuesday.

According to SANRAL eastern region project manager Dumisani Nkabinde, the bypass will be in place until 15 December.

‘It is not a detour, but just a switching of traffic from the northbound to the southbound carriageway,’ said Nkabinde.

‘We have built two carriageways going under the new bridge and we plan to have traffic travelling on both the north- and southbound carriageways by middle December,’ he said.

He confirmed that traffic would still be kept as one lane in both directions from Tuesday.

The current bypass at Mtubatuba should also be removed on 15 December.

The Eteza intersection upgrade is part of a bigger, R920-million N2 construction project.

SANRAL is busy building a new northbound carriageway that will stretch from Mtunzini to Empangeni.

Workers will today (Thursday) close sections of this road between 9am and 12pm while they lift a bridge.

‘There may be reason to have more than one closure, but the duration of any stop will not be longer than 10 minutes,’ SANRAL said.
