Rains fail to boost dam levels

'We urge everyone to harvest rain water and make use of purified water for cooking and drinking'

DESPITE recent rains, citizens of Zululand still need to adhere to water usage restrictions and use water sparingly.

This according to City of uMhlathuze spokesman, Mdu Ncalane.

The rain received in the last two weeks has made a minimal difference in all dams, lakes and other water sources from which the City extracts water.

As of Friday, our main source, Goedertrouw Dam was only measured at 19,73%. There has been a slight rise in water level as it was at 17.3% a few weeks ago.

‘Lake Mzingazi has risen to 58.4% and Lake Cubhu remains at 100%. This is because Lake Cubhu is relatively small and has a large catchment area,’ said Ncalane.

‘On the positive side, all major reservoirs in the area are more than 80% full, but this doesn’t mean we can lift water restrictions.

‘We urge everyone to harvest rain water and make use of purified water for cooking and drinking. We are still in drought season. We thank God for the little rain we are getting and beg for more rain,’ said City Mayor, Mdu Mhlongo.

‘Our people should learn more about and get used to using water tanks to store rain water because we are not out of the drought yet. We are still on Level 4 restrictions, which is a critical situation. You may have experienced the heavy rain but it has little impact on our water sources,’ he said.

Mhlongo also urged all citizens with homes along rivers, streams, lakes and any other areas which are hazardous, to stay alert during heavy rains and flash storms, which may cause flooding and life threatening incidents.
