City mayor promises upliftment for Macekane community

'You will be pleased to know that you will now benefit from our R3.1-billion budget'

THE City of uMhlathuze will do everything in its power to provide professional service delivery to the people of Ntambanana.

This commitment was made by Mayor Mduduzi Mhlongo during a mayoral imbizo and IDP programme at the Macekane sports ground.

Mhlongo welcomed three Macekane wards which previously fell under the Ntambanana Municipality – wards 31, 32 and 33.

‘When Ntambanana was dismantled as a municipality, the communities needed to be serviced. That’s why we are here, to introduce effective programmes as this area is mainly rural and underdeveloped.

‘We have received countless awards and accolades for good administration. We have received clean audit reports for the past three years and are hoping to receive another one. You will be pleased to know that you will now benefit from our R3.1-billion budget.

‘You will also benefit from our programme of assisting those students who excel in matric with registration fees. This year alone we assisted about 100 learners.

‘We have come here with three water tankers to address water shortages that has ravaged this community for years.

But it is imperative to note that as a city we have not overcome the drought, so people must continue using water sparingly,’ he said.

Mhlongo, who also opened the Macekane sports ground, said his council will fast-track service delivery in Macekane, starting with the upgrading of road infrastructure.

‘We have also given this community two trucks to be used for firefighting purposes,’ he said.

Mhlongo, accompanied by his deputy, Cllr Slondile Mkhize, city Speaker Mfundo Mthenjana and Chief Whip Manie Lourens, warned against crime in the area, which he said was hindering development.

The Macekane community was also given an opportunity to have an input in the city’s Integrated Development Plan (IDP) for the first time, where issues of unemployment, housing, roads and electricity were the main topics of discussion.
