The sky’s the limit for Gert

Gert Smith completes his first long distance trip on his Gyrocopter, after a two month journey in obtaining his license

AFTER a two-month journey in obtaining his gyrocopter license, Gert Smith finally took to the skies for his first long distance trip from Johannesburg via Newcastle, landing at the Empangeni airfield.

Also on board the hybrid helicopter was Smith’s instructor Matthew Zalewski from 303 Squadron Flight School based in Johannesburg.

‘Flying has been my life-long dream and this journey has been a wonderful experience,’ beamed Smith.

The flight took four hours and anxiously awaiting Smith’s arrival at the airfield was his wife Helen, son Francois and close friends and colleagues.

‘We experienced a little rain in Melmoth, but had clear skies for the rest of the flight,’ Smith said.

Being a Financial Advisor, Gert sacrificed many hours of work as well as family time to achieve his goal of obtaining his license.

When asked ‘where to from here?’, he excitedly explained that he plans on coastal flying and long distance flying to various parts of Africa, including northern Botswana and Namibia.
