WATCH: Police stalwart retires

He commended his crew for pulling together as a team

LONG-SERVING Mtubatuba SAPS Detective Colonel Londo Israel Gumbi received a hero’s retirement party after spending 36 long years protecting communities.

The function, characterised by song and dance, was held at the Protea Hotel Umfolozi on Friday.

Gumbi said he began police work in 1980 when he was approached by an Ubombo policeman, and joined the force even though he didn’t like it at the time.

‘I started running after criminals stationed at Ubombo police station, then went to join the Mbazwana crew.

‘It was only in 2005 when I joined Mtubatuba SAPS as a detective, leading a team of detectives for 11 years,’ Gumbi said.

He commended his crew for pulling together as a team.

He encouraged the young detectives to up their game to ensure culprits are thrown behind bars.

‘You must work hard and make sure the cases you are investigating end up in court for prosecution to take place,’ he stressed.

Col Gumbi lambasted the government for not building enough prisons.

‘The lack of correctional facilities cause prison authorities to release criminals before serving their time, in doing so adding more strain on the police because the parolees continue to do crime, ending up right back in jail.

‘Convicted criminals must remain behind bars until they have served their time.’

Gumbi thanked all the Mtubatuba police members for making his job of keeping the communities safe an easy one.
