Happy ending for trapped kitten

'At first I feared it was a little baby but soon realised it was the echoing meows of a kitten'

A BABY kitten trapped in a municipal manhole in Via Cassiandra on Friday morning led to over a dozen community members teaming up to rescue the animal.

Local real estate agent, Florence Pillay was driving along the street at about 10.30am when she heard the little kitten’s cries and pulled over to investigate.

‘At first I feared it was a little baby but soon realised it was the echoing meows of a kitten.

‘The colleague I was travelling with could not believe I could hear so well as the kitten was at the bottom of the manhole.’

‘I flagged down the first passing motorist who happened to be police officer, Neil van der Merwe and our efforts to pull off the manhole covered failed.

‘The Richards Bay SPCA were called to the scene and inspectors Shelly Prinsloo and Wynand Strauss also tried in vain to remove the manhole cover which was damaged and could not be opened,’ said Pillay.

Over a dozen community members stopped at the scene and tried to open the manhole cover but it was the City of uMhlathuze Municipality plumbing department who eventually hammered their way through the cover and used their stepladder to to retrieve the kitten.

The two hour rescue operation had a happy ending as the the female kitten, purred with excitement after receiving a bowl of fresh milk and was taken to a local vet for a check up.
