A handful of students received provincial colours, with two earning their national colours

LOCAL karatekas of the Hluhluwe JKA Dojo excelled at various JKA competitions throughout the year.

A handful of students received provincial colours, with two earning their national colours.

Hluhluwe JKA Dojo falls under the South African Japan Karate Association (SAJKA).

Results from this year are as follows –
• Aphile Makamo (boys U9 yellow belt) – won a bronze medal for kata and a silver for kumite at Northern Natal championships held in Newcastle and earned his provincial colours at Pinetown by winning a silver medal for kata, which saw him then go and compete at national level.

• Tristin Davies (boys U10 purple belt) – took home two bronze medals for kumite and kata at Northern KZN JKA championships and then went on to get two gold medals at the provincial championships held in Pinetown for kata and kumite. He also achieved his SA colours by winning a bronze medal for kumite at the South African National JKA championships, held at the Standard Bank Arena in Johannesburg.

• Cody Spencer (boys U9 yellow belt) – walked off with a bronze medal for kata and a silver medal for kumite at Northern Natal Championships, then proceeded to take another bronze medal at the provincial championships for kumite. He also competed at the SAJKA national tournament.

• Sensei Warren McCall (2nd Dan black belt) – took a bronze medal for kumite at the Northern Natal Championships in the men’s open elite division and obtained his South African Judges qualification at the national championships.

• Richard McCall (boys U13 brown belt) – won a silver medal for kumite at Northern Natal Championships and took a bronze medal for kumite at the provincial championships. He also competed at the SAJKA national championships held in Johannesburg.

• Sempei Chantelle Groot (women’s open brown belt division) – won a bronze medal for kumite at the Northern KZN competition, two silver medals for her provincial colours and fourth place for kata and a gold medal for juo ipon kumite at national level, giving her SA colours.

• Joshua Groot (boys U12 brown belt) – won a bronze medal in Newcastle, a bronze medal in Pinetown and competed at the national championship.
