Women rally against cancer

The afternoon was filled with words of encouragement and comfort from Richard Ntuli

GIVING staff and friends the chance to enjoy tea and cake together in support of CANSA, Life Empangeni Private Hospital hosted its fourth Cuppa for CANSA fund-raiser last Friday.

To create cancer awareness and promote early detection, the day included a presentation by Dr Jayeshnee Moodley, a specialist in gynaecology and obstetrics, who provided information on cervical cancer, the causes and the importance of having regular health screening. Statistics show that one in 40 sexually active women are diagnosed with cervical cancer.

Dr Moodley further explained that cervical cancer can be prevented by having the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, given to girls from the ages of 11 before they are exposed to the virus.

Regular pap smears, a painless test used to detect early cell changes in the neck of the womb, allows for treatment at the pre-cancer stage to prevent development of cervical cancer.

The afternoon was filled with words of encouragement and comfort from Richard Ntuli, who shared his journey and the experience of supporting his wife who was diagnosed with cancer in 2014.

He reminded the audience of the importance of providing support to sufferers.

CANSA Community Mobilizer Lizelle van Zyl, also took the opportunity to highlight the work being done by mobile clinics in the area, which assist people in remote areas with access to healthcare and screening for early detection of cancer, such as breast cancer and melanomas.
