Goedertrouw pipeline project ‘still on track’

Various forms of communication are planned, including road shows and a flyer campaign

THOUGH the timeline appears ambitious, 1 November 2016 is still the official day for the start of the Tugela-Goedertrouw Transfer Scheme pipeline project.

With a budget of R407-million, the turnkey project will double the river-to-dam rate of transfer from the present 1.1m3 per second to 2.4m3 per second.

Stakeholders at a meeting hosted at Mhlathuze Water on Tuesday heard that despite there being no design on the table yet, the Department of Water and Sanitation was moving steadily on procurement and other issues.

Four task teams have been formed, namely Technical, Environmental, Electricity and Community Facilitation.

A comprehensive stakeholder and communication plan was presented, explaining ‘how to consult, engage and communicate the right key messages, from the right communicator to the right audience, through the right channel, at the right time’.

Ensuring strong relationships is a vital part of the project, as with only 12 months allotted for completion, there is no leeway for stoppages related to conflict with communities.

Besides the obvious participants such as DWS, Mhlathuze Water, CEO forum, consultants and contractors, the list of stakeholders is vast and includes the Ingonyama Trust, Cogta, various government departments, EKZN Wildlife, Eskom, traditional authorities, ward councillors, district and local municipalities.

Various forms of communication are planned, including road shows and a flyer campaign.

The forum will meet again on 8 November, when comprehensive reports from all four task teams will be presented.
