Smallest Hippo Rally event

'It was a matter of 'quality over quantity'.

ONLY around 350 bikers revved up their iron horses this year to attend what is historically the biggest annual rally in KZN.

The Hippo Rally, which normally expects in excess of 3 000 riders to ride from across the country to Alkantstrand in Richards Bay, had a relatively small turnout at the 18th gathering, but organiser Gian Ferraris said it was still a success.

‘It was a matter of ‘quality over quantity’.

‘Those who did attend all had a fantastic time with no complaints reported during the weekend.

‘Local band Angus performed; we hosted the Miss Hippo Rally pageant and there were loads of giveaways, including a stainless braai, cooler boxes, carrier bags and tools.’

He said the only hiccup was an unfortunate bike accident near the Mondi robots on the John Ross Parkway on route back from the mass ride on Saturday morning.

‘Our marshals, emergency services and the SAPS were on scene to assist.

‘He did sustain injuries, but was fortunately released from hospital in the early afternoon.

‘We would like to thank the City of uMhlathuze Municipality for doing a great job of clearing and preparing the camping and entertainment site at Alkantstrand, and the traffic department for looking so well after our guys.

‘We look forward to seeing a larger crowd of bikers next year!’
