Big 5 Challenge finale in Hluhluwe

The race, on Saturday, 29 October, is a flattish ride, but watch out for the sand

IT is fitting that the last race in the Bell Big 5 Challenge is being held in Hluhluwe, aptly named the Hluhluwe SuperSpar Rhino Charge.

A change this year is that the series prize giving will be held at 6pm at the same venue.

The race sees the riders having the privilege of riding along the shores of Lake St Lucia in the False Bay section of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

The race, on Saturday, 29 October, is a flattish ride, but watch out for the sand.

The Hluhluwe Privaatskool is a perfect venue with shady trees, a children’s playground, a ready-made chill zone and a swimming pool.

The route
Track builders Greg Davies and Julian Simon have made sure that the riders get to see False Bay with its abundant wildlife (no dangerous game) and indigenous forests.

Either walking trails or service roads are used as riders head down towards Lake St Lucia for a single track stretch along the lake shores.
The 25km then heads back to the school, while the 50km race enters the northern section of the park where the single track narrows and has riders ducking and diving through the trees.

The 50km then returns to the south along the shores before rejoining the 25km route and back to the school.

Sadly, the 10km track cannot get to the park, but the route through the surrounding farmlands is two loops of 5km each, which allows parents to watch their progress.

Logistics
Registration is from 6am to 8am, with the 50km starting at 8.30am, the 25km at 9am and the 10km at 9.30am.
GPS co-ordinates for the start (Hluhluwe Privaatskool) are S27 57.928 E32 20.522.

There will be camping available at the school at R150 per person per night.

On the Saturday evening, after the prize giving, there will be a sheep and warthog on the spit and traditional Zulu dancing and drumming around a bonfire.

Contact Eldaret Taylor on 035 5622082 or 083 6617664 for more information about the prize giving.
