New iNduna for Ndabayakhe community

Being married no longer a ticket for top position

THE notion that only married men are considered for leadership roles in areas under traditional authorities is outdated. The game has changed.

This was the sentiment of Madlebe Traditional Authority head, iNkosi Zenzo Zungu, speaking at the inauguration of iNduna Khombokwakhe Mkhwanazi of Mangquku Reserve near Ndabayakhe in ward 29.

Zungu said he was convinced that iNduna Mkhwanazi (49) was the right man for the job despite being a bachelor, adding that being a married man was no longer a ticket for people to get into positions of authority.

‘I appointed him in this position owing to the outstanding leadership qualities he displayed while he was in an acting capacity. We gave him a test to prove his worth, and he passed with flying colours.’

iNkosi Zungu urged the new iNduna to work with people from all walks of life, regardless of their personal beliefs.

People’s person
‘We expect you to be people’s persons. You must be prepared to resolve any disputes emanating from your community. Even if there are people you don’t see eye to eye with, you must reconcile with them and start on a new slate.

‘You must be prepared for all sort of missiles that will be thrown at you. Your strength will be tested from time to time. It comes with being in a leadership position.

‘I also wish to appeal to you to execute your duties in a responsible and respectful manner,’ iNduna Zungu said.

‘I have had experiences where people I appointed in the past committed criminal activities under my name. Do not create conflict between myself and my people.’

Deputy chairperson of KwaMadlebe Traditional Council, Philemon Mndaba, appealed to the new iNduna to assist the vulnerable community of Magquku, especially the children who are not attending school.

‘You must regularly engage your community by holding public meetings and keep them informed about issues pertaining to rural development,’ he said.

In his reply, iNduna Mkhwanazi said he was humbled by the trust shown in him and his traditional council, and vowed not to disappoint.
