Jordan on Olympic mission

The talented middle distance swimmer has been racking up an impressive rèsumè

GRANTLEIGH Schools swimmer Jordan Stevens is on the up after being selected for the South African Youth team that will compete at the Youth Nationals next year.

The energetic and motivated 16-year-old’s hard work has paid off, with the talented middle distance swimmer racking up an impressive rèsumè.

Jordan earned the Grantleigh Swimmer of the Year award this year and picked up the Victor Ludorum award at the uThungulu schools gala earlier this season.

His other achievements include the Grantleigh Schools Victor Ludorum awards in 2013, 2015 and 2016, the U16 and U17 200m individual medley schools records (2015 and 2016), the U17 50m butterfly record (2016), represented KZN at the SA Schools Championships (2015), the KZN swim team (2016), reaching SA Nationals Levels 1, 2 and 3 between 2013 and 2016, participating in the SA Short Course Championships (2016) and recently qualified for the SA Youth team for the 200m individual medley and 200m backstroke.

But these achievements have not come easy.

Jordan trains six times a week under Ushaka Swimming Club coach Francois Boshoff.

‘I train once a day for two hours a session, completing 6km plus. I also gym twice a week and visit a biokineticist once a week.’

Jordan also plays second team hockey at school and has represented the Northern Coastal team between 2012 and 2014.

‘I enjoy hockey, but owing to my heavy swim schedule I cannot commit one hundred percent.’

The diligent lad has found a balance between academics and sport, averaging between 70 and 80 percent for his subjects.

When not torpedoing his way through a pool or studying, Jordan can be found hanging out with friends, listening to music or watching movies.

This young go-getter has raised the bar for himself and aims to reach a sub one minute time for the 100m butterfly, a sub two minute 15 seconds time for the 200m individual medley and sub two minutes for the 200m freestyle.

Once finished with school next year, Jordan hopes to study accounting in America or at Pretoria University, qualify for the senior national swimming team and go on to compete at the 2020 Olympic Games.
