Bay give Schools XI cricket lesson in Weber Cup opener

The Bay bowlers got good reward for putting the ball in the right areas

RICHARDS Bay Rugby Club started its 2016/17 cricket season off with a bang, beating the Schools XI side by eight wickets in their Weber Cup match played at Addison Park on Saturday.

Schools XI captain Trevor Kietzman won the toss and elected to bat.

‘The track looked flat and should not change through the day, so batting first makes sense,’ said Kietzman.

The schools side reached 164 before being bowled out in the 40th over.

Kietzman led from the front with a solid knock of 41 and was backed up at the other end by opening batsman Michael Bothma, who posted 29.

The Bay bowlers got good reward for putting the ball in the right areas, with David Sommerville 2/16 in 5, Pierre Nel 2/37 in 8 and Philani Cuambe 2/30 in 8 all producing with the cherry in hand.

Richards Bay reached 165/2 thanks to a solid unbeaten knock of 76 by all-rounder Brandon Foxcroft.

Kietzman got into the action again, ending with bowling figures of 1/9 in 3.
