Alzheimer support in Richards Bay

'We want to create awareness about the disease and offer support to patients and their families'

FAMILIES and patients affected by Alzheimer‘s disease will now have a local network of support when Alzheimer’s South Africa starts a support group in Richards Bay next month.

After having received numerous requests from local community members who are caring for loved ones diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, the group meetings will take place on the first Thursday of every month at the AGS (Kerk Sonder Mure) Arboretum.

According to Fienie Labuschagne who is assisting with the meetings, the nearest home for Alzheimer’s patients is in eShowe but many people locally are caring for their loved ones at home and need support.

‘We want to create awareness about the disease and offer support to patients and their families.’

The first meeting is scheduled for 1 September and is significant as World Alzheimer’s month is celebrated during September.

Awareness
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. It is a irreversible disease of the brain cells which causes the person’s thinking ability and memory to deteriorate.

It also affects behaviour, mood and emotions and the ability to perform daily living activities.

People with Alzheimer’s disease also have a shortage of some important chemicals in their brain. These chemicals are involved with the transmission of messages within the brain.

We all forget things from time to time but in this case their memory loss interferes to a great degree with their normal daily life and they battle to cope.

Members interested in joining the group can contact Fienie Labuschagne on 072 2596610.
