Clarion call for elephants

Women to raise elephant conservation issues through South Africa

THERE was much celebration at the Sibaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom in Umhlanga on Women’s Day as a group of women left on an epic trip which will see them travelling 10 000km through 10 African countries.

The aim of the expedition is to create awareness of the plight of elephants among communities along the route.

A large crowd of well-wishers of the Elephant Ignite Expedition gathered to bid them farewell.

Their first stop was the Thula Thula Exclusive Private Game Reserve in Heatonville, where the resident elephants gave the girls their first sighting of the journey.

In true Thula Thula style, the elephants put on a fantastic show, surrounding the vehicles as if to bid them well on their journey.

The experience will surely be remembered by the girls throughout the trip.

Wednesday night was spent at Phinda Game Reserve, before the group travelled to the Royal Jozini Big 6 Reserve in Swaziland.

Their last Zululand stop will be at the Thembe Elephant Park today (Thursday).

The expedition will also be visiting special elephant projects along the way which will take in, among other countries, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Zambia and Kenya.

All funds raised will be donated to pre-determined elephant institutes along the way.
