Savage attack at city complex

Stabbing, shooting, suicide and a train accident mar the weekend in the Bay

A 21-year-old Birdswood man is in a critical condition in the ICU of Netcare The Bay Hospital after he was savagely attacked in his bed and stabbed multiple times.

According to SAPS Communication Officer, Capt Debbie Ferreira, the incident happened on Friday afternoon at around 2pm at a complex near the airport.

‘The motive for the attack, the number of suspects involved and the extent of his injuries are unknown at this stage of the investigation.

‘He is still under sedation, but according to his father, he was stabbed many times.

‘We know the attackers gained entry into the property by breaking down the precast walling.

‘The victim was alone and sleeping at the time.’

The young man’s father told Bay Watch via WhatsApp that his son was not ready to talk about the traumatic incident.

He confirmed that his son was still in ICU, but said he would pull through.

A neighbour who visited the family in hospital said the victim suffered seven stab wounds to his lungs and five to his back, with multiple lacerations to his arms, back, chest and shoulders.

‘They are seemingly still draining blood from his lungs, but he will recover.

‘The doctors said he was lucky to be alive.

‘This is a very sad and disturbing day for the family, but indeed for all of us.This could have been anyone of our children.

‘An innocent man taking an afternoon nap in his home was brutally and savagely attacked with complete disregard for his life,’ the neighbour said.

The victim’s name is being withheld pending an interview with the family.

Shooting
Meanwhile, also on Friday night, a 23-year-old had a narrow escape when he was shot in the ankle in the parking area near Lion’s Den.

According to Capt Ferreira, the incident happened around midnight.

‘It would seem as if the complainant was at the wrong place at the wrong time.’

He told police he was in the vicinity of a group of people arguing, but he could not hear what they were talking about.
A shot suddenly went off and he was struck in the ankle.

He was transported to Nseleni Clinic and later transferred to Ngwelezana Hospital.

In other incidents a 28-year-old man committed suicide and another man died under the wheels of a train at Nsezi.
The victim of the train accident has not been identified.
